THE BOLTER & CHAINSWORD LIBRARIUM PAINTING CHALLENGE 2012
Fortress of the Unforgiven Entry
DARK ANGEL SCOUT SQUAD
PHASE 11
Commenced 31 April 2012
So I managed to complete my small 5-man squad LPC 2012 vow well in time. Captain's Sempers enthusiasm on the B+C board certainly became infectious and got me motivated to try and continue with this project and if at all possible complete my long cherished dream of creating a stand alone dark Angel Scout Army to memorialise veteran Sergeant Naaman. Unfortunately at this present moment I am working on it using a Codex Space Marines army list as it is impossible to create one in the current DA Codex (4th Edition)

Keeping with my philosophy of trying to create each model in a unique pose I started work on my collected scout models that had been waiting for many years. This squad of snipers is made up of  (from left to right) metal scout missile launcher, metal scout sniper, metal catachan sniper and two metal cadian snipers) The presence of their cloaks makes it easier to model as scouts while their build is about the same. I just added a greenstuff cloak for the missile launcher scout and groin armour to two of the Ig snipers.
Both squads undercoated black and ready for work. I intend to make this army in five man squads without squad markings and once all are done do the emblems etc and make up the squads.
The next five-man squad is one bearing bolters along with modeled as a sergeant. On the left for those who might recognize is Blood Angel Scout Lysander from the Bloodquest Black Library Limited Edition Diorama. Obviously i couldn't have a long haired eye-patched scout so he lost his head to a regular scout head. The second is a Catachen Guardsmanhead on a plastic scout body armed with a metal bolter from the old scout bikers. The third is the metal Heavy Bolter Scout which i had in my previous army converted to carry an Auspex and a Bolter and decided to do the same pose as i found it quite dynamic. The last two are straight forward metal bolter carrying scouts. I just added camo cloaks with greenstuff.
I think I am getting better with the greenstuff sculpting but I still can't get the kind of folds that the GW sculpters get, especially on the metal models. At the moment I am simply using a single piece of thinned out GS to create and wrap around the models. I might try separate sheets so that the folds can be created by layering, next time!
Jumping straight ahead to the fully painted sniper and scout squads. I am quite certain that I am getting a much better camouflage effect with thinner lines.
One of my main achievements was the metal effect on gun barrels, especially the sniper rifles. I had previously always undercoated black, dry brushed boltgun metal and then washed with black wash. After 14 years in the hobby I decied to to undercoat with black, paint with boltgun metal and then washa couple of times with black wash. The effect is pretty realistic and i can't imagine why i hadn't done that before!!!!
