Tallarn
This was once a very fertile and rich world with vast oceans and beaytiful forests. During the Horus heresy they were attacked without warning by the Iron Earriors Space marine legion. As the virus bombing started, the population fled underground in to viral-shelters and most survived the onslought. But when they re-emerged a few weeks later, after the virus had run its course, the world was barren with no other life form left alive. When the iron hands returned to conquer the now devastated planet they met with a ferocious defence as the defence forces re-emerged from their underground shelters and a long war took place. The hostile environemnet forced the fighting to be limited to sheltered environments, hence mostly vehicle based warfare. During the seven month battle, the chaos forces were gradually forced away. The largest tank battles of the Horus Heresy took place on Tallarn. The reason for the imprtance attached to tallarn by Horus was to become clear much later. The Tallarns went underground and live in vast caverns. They use tall towers to trap the vapour from the atmosphere to condense in to useful water. It has ceased to be a rich and productive world where success is measured by simple survival.
During their underground construction, thet Tallarn discovered a Black Bedrock which was impervious to all tools and machinary. As they excavated around it they realised that this was a circular structure, which suddenly sprange to life with evel mystical energy. At the same time, eldar custodians in their legendary Black Library also felt the awakening and set in motion events to contain it. What the Tallarn had discovered was one of the three legendary gateways of the eldar gods. The Cursus of Alganar, a vortex of unimaginable power from the tme before the fall of the eldar. It was this that the iron hands had been deprived of during the Horus Heresy.
The eldar struck without warning. Both sides not knowing that the other was in league with chaos. As far as the eldar were concerend they had to destroy the cursus before it was too late. They only too well recognised the work of Khaines destroyer Slaanesh. The Tallarn fought back with their customary mobile warfare and stubborness. The eldar fought for the survival of the galaxy. Then, the gateway began to expel the minions of chaos along with the laughter of the gods, which sent a chill in to both Tallarn and Eldar. A hurried truce was called by the Tallarn commander, and both forces united. Initially falling back under the relentles advance of chaos, the lightning raids of the Tallarn and subsequent human led jet bike raids slowed the Chaos and ground them to a halt. The further they moved from the cursus the weaker chaos got, while the Tallarn used their guile to draw out the chaos horde. At the opportune moment a furious counter attack by the combined forces destroyed the invaders and the cursus contained. The price was high, but had it not been contained it would have been higher. The eldar departed in friendship and the Tallarn buried the cursus once more. (Ref: Codex Imperial Guard, 2nd ed; Page 15) |
