The Book of the Unforgiven uses a combination of standard official rules and unique rules developed by the Inner Circle. Where the standard rules are appropriate they have been included while new rules have been added or additions made to standard official rules to maintain the army's core rules in line with the spirit of its background. These rules are supplementary to those described in the Codex: Spacemarines V4.0 and Codex: Dark Angels (V2.0) and the DA FAQ V 4.1.

NEW SPECIAL RULES
Space Marine Side Arms

Veteran space marines are honoured by being given the opportunity to field special or heavy weapons within their units. Such experienced warriors rarely take to the field of attle with only their special or heavy weapons, as these weapons, powerful as they may be, also have slower rates of fire and are temperamental at times. Most such space marines arm themselves with a bolt pistol for personal protection.

Rule: Consider all special and heavy weapon troopers within HQ, Tactical, Veteran, Scout and Devastator squads to be armed with a bolt pistol in addition to their special or heavy weapon. They may use the bolt pistol on any of their turns where their special or heavy weapon cannot be used, either due to movement or due to malfunction.
Combat Squads & Overwatch
These rules are completely new and stand alone rules that should be used in conjunction with all the other official special rules. These rules can be used for normal Space Marine chapters as well as Unforgiven chapters. The provide the opportunity to realize better tactical flexibility with your units as well as add greater realism. These rules will not alter play balance significantly. As always, use them with your opponents permission.

Surviving crew members who exit/abandon a vehicle are considered to be a single unit. If led by an independent or non-independent character, they may move normally in subsequent turns. If no character is present, they must attempt to move to within 2" of another mobile vehicle, board an empty razorback or automatically fallback. Any survivors boarding an empty Razorback will remain within that vehicle until the end of the game, or until the vehicle is destroyed / immobilised.

The crew of the spacemarine armoured formations also train constantly in their specific roles. Where an armoured breakthrough requires the presence of the ironwing, their vehicles are fitted with additional crew protection. These measures along with the power armour of the crew members allow them to escape all but the most direct hits to their vehicles. To represent this the following rules apply to all damaged vehicles in an Ironwing Battleforce. This applies only to the crew of the vehicles and not the passengers. The passengers follow the rules described in the WH40K v 4.0 rule book.

Vehicle Immobilised:
Crew may elect to abandon the vehicle, in which case, representative models are deployed within 2" of the vehicle. They may not move that turn, but may fire their personal weapons. Crew members are armed with bolt pistols.

Vehicle Destroyed:
Crew may attempt to escape the blazing wreck. For each crew member make an armour save against the strength and AP value of the offending weapon. For each survivor  roll a D3. On a 1 the crewman is trapped within the wreck and dies. On a 2 or 3 they escape. The survivors are positioned within 2" of the vehicle and cannot move or shoot that turn.
