Commander of the Fleet Apollyon Command Title: Grandmaster of Fleet Honorific Title: Seeker of the stars. Overview Battle fleet angelus mortis is a vast command that encompasses each and every space faring ship belonging to the Dark Angels. The command is responsible for the safe passage of their strike forces, protection of their surrounding space and for the transit of their huge fortress monastery. Complement Grandmaster of Fleet Apollyon, Seeker of the stars, (Command ship Pride of Caliban) Battle barges 6 (Unrelenting Fury, Ultimate Vengeance, Undying Faith) Strike Cruisers 12 Rapid Strike Vessels 22 Each battle barge is commanded by a grandmaster, the strike cruisers by a master and the rapid strike vessels by brother-captains. Each vessel has a command crew of space marines and is served by human chapter serfs and servitors. The command is also responsible for the safe transit of the fortress monastery itself. Duties A large number of offensive and defensive duties fall under the purview of Battle Fleet Mortis Angelus. Transport of Dark Angel Strike Forces The rapid transit of strike forces whenever the emperor's realm is threatened is one of their primary tasks. Most strike forces could be transported rapidly in a single strike cruiser. However larger forces are needed and considerable planning is required for their safe transit and deployment. Home Defense Safety of the space surrounding the fortress monastery is of prime importance to the chapter. The battle fleet tends to take complete control of this region, preventing enemy activity and even friendly forces, lest they be interested in matters of the Dark Angels. Planetary Assault This is the ultimate show of space marine power. The considerable power of the battle barges are reserved for this event. The assault forces are usually led by a battle barge with its escort of strike cruisers and rapid strike vessels. It is a sight to behold and a daunting task force for any enemy to take on. Fleet Action Space marine fleets are not designed for conventional space fleet warfare. They are aimed at planetary assaults and close in boarding actions, especially against large targets such as space hulks and space fortresses. However as shown in the space around Armageddon, these crews are quite capable of adapting to standard fleet action and developing their own techniques. |
