Commander of the Forge:            Fortius
Command Title:                          Grandmaster of the Forge
Honorific Title:                             Maker of Death

Overview
Fabricius Mortis is the combined arsenal and armoury in the Tower of Angels. Situated deep within the bedrock of the floating fortress monastery it is the center of development, maintenance and repair of everything from the standard bolter to the strike cruisers of the Battle Fleet Angelus Mortis. The unique nature of its chain of command lies in the fact that despite commanding the numerous disciples of the machine god, the Grandmaster of the Forge who is in direct overall command of the Fabricius Mortis is not a techmarine. However, the fact that, only one who is extremely well versed in the arcane arts of the machine god is elevated to this position makes this individual extremely unique within the chapter.

Complement
The grandmaster of the forge commands a wide variety of staff to accomplish their onorous duties. These include the following:

Grandmaster of the Forge           Fortius, Maker of death
Techmarine Suprema                  3
Techmarines                              42 (This includes those attached to the line companies)
Apprenta                                    8
Servitors                                    136
Technomats                               96

The complement of the combined arsenal and armoury of the Dark Angels chapter far exceeds those of codex chapters. The nature of their mobile fortress and the lack of access to terrestrial and large space based repair facilities combined with their need for secrecy and independence has evolved in to their ability to produce and maintain almost all of their needs on the fortress monastery. The entire complement of techmarines comes under the direct command of the grandmaster of the forge. They are seconded to the relevant line companies for combat exposure and experience.

Deep within the facilities of the Fabricius Mortis there lies a secluded area which is reserved entirely for use by the first company. Here the land raiders, dreadnoughts and the sacred tactical dreadnought armour are maintained and repaired amidst supreme secrecy. Only techmarines inducted in to the Deathwing have access to this area. The vehicles and weaponry of the Deathwing Company are not available for requisition by other commanders, unlike the rest of the arsenal deposited within the armoury. One of the distinct differences from the codex chapters is the assignment of razorbacks to the three battle companies and as a result the smaller number based within the armorium. The armoury is also the repository for a variety of armoured fighting vehicles and support vehicles not assigned to the respective line companies. These include the following:

Predator - Destructor pattern                    9                      Land Raider MkIII                         3
Predator - Annihilator pattern                   13                     Land Raider Mk II                         4
Vindicator                                              11                     Land Raider Prometheus               2
Whirlwind                                               12                     Land raider Helios                        1
Razorbacks                                            6
Rhino MkII                                              6

Duties
The functions of the staff of the Fabricius Mortis of the Dark Angels chapter are numerous. The more important ones are listed below:

Maintenance of armaments and vehicles
Without doubt the greatest grain on their resources is the constant maintenance of the vehicles and wargear of the chapter. Each company will attempt to maintain their vehicles and wargear with the capabilities of their space marines and techmarine. Whenever battle damage or simple attrition requires greater skill or technology they are brought to the attention of the armoury.

Production of weapons and ammunition
The armoury has limited capacity to produce the standard pattern of ammunition and small arms. They provide the entire requirement of small arms ammunition for the chapter. However, when it comes to larger weaponry, especially for those of the fleet, the chapter tends to look elsewhere for the production of the ammunition, though enough supplies are always stored within the arsenal for protracted warfare.

Development of new technology and Integration of Systems
At their hearts, the techmarines of the Dark Angels chapter do have some of the yearning of the disciples of the machine god for knowledge. They are in constant search for new technology and are ever ready to adapt them to the chapters needs. This includes the investigation of captured alien technology as well as recovered artifacts.

Battlefield Combat Duties
Techmarines assigned to the command squads of the masters of the line companies and other command staff, have many battlefield duties. This includes intelligence gathering using their wide array of data ciphers as well as targeting information for heavy weapons. In close combat these techmarines are capable of using their servo arms to deadly effect. Battlefield repair of the chapter's vehicles and recovery of alien wargear and vehicles under fire are further examples of the myriad combat duties performed by the techmarines.

Ironwing Battle Group
Occasionally, when the need for a completely mobile and armoured formation to achieve a rapid break-through, flanking manoeuvre or counter attack is required reserve formations of armoured vehicles and spare vehicles from battle companies had

This entire section is one attempt to describe the long history of the Dark Angels in a linear form. Every known piece of history and event based on GW publications has been written in my own words and linked together in a reasonably plausible manner by additional fiction. This is in no way the official GW version nor is it in anyway an attempt to infringe on their IP. There are many versions of imperial history buried within the sands of time and this is but just one of them. Read on if you dare!

been put under a single command for short periods. Subsequently such ideas were formalised and a small command group formed, which could rapidly
absorb battle field mobile formations in a powerful armoured gauntlet to achieve the necessary objectives. Since the vast majority of armoured vehicles were maintained in the chapter's armoury and assigned to battle forces as required, the Grandmaster of the Forge was assigned to create this command group and the necessary tactics and logistics.  Thus formed was the Ironwing, which unlike other companies does not have a standing complement of troops or vehicles, but a logistical and command organisation which can quickly create an immensely powerful mobile strike force.
